Mitropacup live from Apolda from 15 February
The Mitropacup 2024 will take place from 15 to 23 February in Apolda, Germany. All 10 Mitropa countries will field a team in the open and women’s categories. The German Chess Federation is organising the event in cooperation with the city of Apolda. As part of the supporting programme, the 1st Open Thuringian Senior Individual Championship will take place parallel to the Mitropacup.
Germany starts in the role of favourites and is obviously going for the double with two strong teams at its home tournament. This feat was last achieved by France in 2022 and 2023, but previously only by Slovenia (2002 and 2005) and Italy (2010 and 2021). In the open class, Germany is well ahead of Italy (2511) and Austria, Switzerland (2479 each) with a rating average of 2626. All other teams are close behind. In the women’s category, Germany is only just ahead of Hungary (2271) with an average of 2309. It is close behind. Italy is third in the seeding list with 2216, Croatia eighth with 2145. The Czech Republic and Austria are slightly lower in the rankings.
The tournament will be played in the town hall in Apolda and broadcasted live on the internet. Starting times are from 15:00 CET, only the final round starts at 10:00. Organizer is Bernd Vöckler, Chief-Arbiter Klaus Deventer. (wk, photo: tournament page)
